End of Year

Well it's been a very trying year to say the least. Staying on the positive hobby side, I did get a fair amount of stuff painted. All the Blackstone minis, Deathwing (finally), two new armies, and filled in the gaps of a few other armies. There was a lot more I wanted to get done, but some days the motivator was just broken.

But fear not! There is plenty of good stuff on my bench right meow. I will make more and varied posts in the new year. I have an idea for a on-going narrative campaign that I really want to happen...

I will be featuring a lot more non-40K games, like Aliens: Another Glorious Day in the Corps, Battletech, and others. Enough rambling, have an excellent New Year's and a even better year!

Necrons Vs Cult

Time to unleash the Necrons! Overpowered Robot Skeletons against the poor Genestealer Cultists? Seems unfair.

(Morgan Freeman voice) It was indeed a slaughter.

We played a Incursion Battle (50PL per side) and used the Open War deck to generate the mission. Nice and straightforward: Kill. Side witht he most PL in kills wins. I like it!
The map was lengthwise, with Army "B" setting up in the middle and Army "A" on either side, we rolled to see who was Army "B", it was me. I didn't like it.

After Deployment
It's awful lonely on the tabletop when the other side only deploys Ambush markers...

At the start of my first turn.
Mrs. Blackheart got to go first, and wow. Two mining lasers took out my Hexmark Destroyer before it got to blink one of its many eyes. I took some serious losses during the shooting phase, but worse was to come in the assault phase. Genestealers may have some shortcomings, but speed is not one of them. In a flurry of Rending Claws half my Destroyers and a full squad of Warriors went down hard.

Two squads of jerks with power tools popped out of the sewers and made their charge rolls. Today was just not going my way.

Still all was not lost. On my turn I put the hurt of a couple of squads of cultists, and got the Destroyer Lord into hand to hand. The speed and firepower of the Tomb Blades is quite useful. Pity they got blasted by Smite and Krak Grenades the next turn.

One turn three it was over, and the last Necron had phased out to that deluxe Monolith in the sky.
Even though it was a horrible (and unexpected) slaughter it was a lot of fun. The Cult are fragile to be sure, but they are numerous and tricksy. A rematch is in order!

Necrons Return

Undead Space Robots from the Past, gotta love them. A race that has just improved over the years as more background has been developed. I had a Necron army long, long ago, (3rd edition) I loved the look, I  just didn't like the way they played on the table. So they got sold off. Now it is time to give them a shot once again.

I stated with the contents of the Indomitus box, nice figures, I found the Warriors a bit tricky to assemble, so thin and wispy. Everybody else was fast and easy to put together. The Royal Warden is my favorite addition to the army, a great looking mini and fills the lieutenant spot in the roster.
The new Destroyers are fun. Big and crazy choppy. I will pick up some more to make a little sub-force of really homicidal robots.

Even more new guys. I look forward to seeing them on the field, I am curious how they will perform.

I have a ton of Necrons on my bench, I should be able to crank them out fairly quickly and get a 50PL force on the table to start getting a feel for them.

Just wait until we put on some fresh paint.

Yet More Space Wolves

Hey look! Space Wolves. Yes, I finally got around to painting up some of the figs from the Indomitus box. I did wait on the new Codex before I built them, just to see what upgrades I could give, and kitbash as needed. Turns out, not much.

I really wanted Primaris Wolf Guard, and I kinda, mostly, got them in the form of the Veteran Intercessors. Only the Pack Leader gets a melee weapon choice, but the updated chainswords are not bad now. Plus they get 5 attacks each on the charge, so they should be fun, and my Wolf Lord has some like-minded people to charge with.

Fresh from Mega-City Neo-Tokyo One is my unit of Outriders. I'm not a huge fan of Space Marine bikers, but these guys are kinda cool. I may get an Invader ATV to hang out with them.

Nouveau Terminators with long range meltaguns? Yes please! These guys are great. Looks, toughness, and firepower. I will pick up the new box set just so I can toss in the dude with a Multi-melta for extra melty fun.

Now I need to pick up an Invader, Techmarine, and maybe an Impulsor. Still thinking about how to create a Wolf Priest.

Next: Not Space Wolves. Probably.

Wolves Vs Cult

Mrs. Blackheart and I had a nice little Combat Patrol battle, Space Wolves versus Genestealer Cult.

I took just infantry, led by my Wolf Lord for their combat debut. The Cult had a Broodlord, some 'Stealers, a Sentinel, and a whole bunch of Cultists.

As usual, I didn't take enough pics during the game, which is a good indicator I'm having fun. The Wolves had a couple turns of impressive shooting, then we got into close combat on the bottom of Turn Two.
"We can just pick them off from here!"

"By Russ's empty stein! Nobody should move that fast!"

The poor Helblasters got shredded. A 5-man Intercessor squad was also mauled by Neophytes armed with power tools. The next turn saw payback aplenty for the Wolves. All the Genestealers were felled by shooting, then the Wolf Lord made an Impressive charge roll and hacked up the Broodlord (top of page picture). The remaining Intercessor Squads cleaned up the streets. A hard fought victory for the Wolves.
We are going to do a three-mission mini campaign with using Combat Patrol. Should be able to play though in one evening. That's the plan at least...

Ghostwolf's Company (III)

Let's bring out the Heavy Metal for the finale. At present I have four vehicles, but I know that will change with the upcoming releases.

The Redemptor Dreadnought is the proper sized walking tank we have always needed. I'm not overwhelmed by the odd swing-open front clamshell, but I don't think it detracts too much from the overall coolness.

A pair of Hovering Death dealers, that can carry troops. Somebody took the "You can never have too much dakka," maxim to heart.

Executioner Grav-Panzer. By far my favorite of the new stuff. So much shooty, and so stylish!

A fair amount of people don't care for the Repulsor, I really like it. It's the heavy IFV concept taken too far. So. Many. Guns. Plus some grenade launchers and anti-air missiles for fun, all while carrying ten Primaris into combat.

Blue-grey Thunder!
Or Airwolfen? Hmmm...
The Stormhawk is a great looking model, and was fun to build and paint. I envision it as the Space Wolves close air support solution in the A-10, P-47, IL-2, style. A bit brutish looking, well armored, and bringing a bunch of firepower to the party.

So that is my first 129 PL of Space Wolves done. More on the way!

Ghostwolf's Company (II)

More show and tell from my COVID summer. Wolf Dudes with guns! I made four five-man squads of Intercessors, three with bolt rifles, and one with Stalker rifles. I used the full gamut of close combat weapons for the Sergeants.

But why stop there? A full squad of Hellblasters must be fun!

A squad of Firebats...I mean, Aggressors for a fiery good time.

Guys who like to shoot things from a safe distance. I do like how the camo cloaks came out.

And of course the quite useful and fun Inceptors. I may need another squad of these guys.

I aim to add some of the troops from the Indomitus box set, and may kitbash me a Wolf Priest.

Next: Space Wolves Armor.

Ghostwolf's Company (I)

My oft delayed Primaris Space Wolves army has finally been finished. It was a truly enjoyable project.

Of course no 40K army is ever really finished, I already have two new units to add to it, and I'm sure more will follow. Let's take a quick look at the HQ units.

First is my converted Wolf Lord, Erikson Ghostwolf. He counts as a Primaris Wolf Lord with Powerfist and Plasma Pistol, 'cause that is a very big Chainsword, more like an Eviscerator, so it should have stats like one.

He was converted from a Primaris LT, and a bunch of Space Wolf bits. The Plasma Pistol is from the Hellblaster Sgt. I'm very happy with how he turned out.

The Rune Priest is pretty much a stock figure, with just a tiny bit of Space Wolf bling added. A good mini, hard to improve on it without overdoing it.

The Wolf Guard Battle Leader is a straight off the sprue build. I did play around with some changes, but in the end just kept him as-is.

The Young King himself, Ragnar Blackmane. Nice to have a new figure after a mere 30-ish years...
The funny thing is I was working on kitbashing a "new" Ragnar figure based on Krom Dragongaze. Good thing I didn't get to the cutting and gluing part of the endeavour.

World Eaters Wednesday #3

As any army grows over time, and especially over editions, some units become less useful or just left behind altogether. Here we see my Forlorn Five, units that where red hot back in day, but now rarely see the tabletop.

The Heldrake (I think) looks cool, and it is okay-ish on the field, but just not worth the points anymore. I'll give it a go in 9th just for fun, and maybe it will surprise me or better yet, my opponent.

Fresh from Apocalypse (2007) it's the Brass Scorpion!

A challenging kitbash, but very cool indeed. It will have its own post soon, with yet more new homemade rules!
Speaking of house rules, I will make some new ones for Krogor the Bloodmad as well. He is a fun Dreadnought, or whatever they Chaosy version is called today. Also works as a standard Helbrute. Yes, I looked it up.

Koldan, Lord on Juggernaut, does have rules (Legends)  but has always struggled to find a place in the army. Maybe he will be the Daemon liaison officer? He is a very early '90s figure but I still like him.

Daemon Prince Kylar. Actually good on the field, just doesn't show up that often. I am thinking of redoing him with a fancy new plastic model. Then he will have the imposing stature a Daemon Prince should have.

Next up: Space Wolves

Combat Patrol Dust Up

The Combat Patrol missions for 9th Edition have turned out to be quite entertaining. Quick battles let you pick some fun army lists that you may not normally have tried.

We did a Ork vs Tyranid battle. Mrs Blackheart's force had a Warboss, 5 Nobz, 20 Ladz, 10 Grot, and a Dred. I brought a Warrior Prime, nine Warriors and six Raveners.

The small map makes for fast engagements! In a surprise to all, the Warriors shot up the Dred on the first turn. Venom cannons are your friend.

On turn Two my Six Raveners arrived and made the charge into the Nobz. It went quite badly for me. I only killed one Nob, and the Warboss made her Heroic Intervention, and poof! No more Raveners. Damn Power Klaws...

We had two more turns of carnage, the battle flowed back and forth with the victory points staying close. At the end of turn four it came down to my Warrior Prime, her injured Warboss and the last Nobz in a fight for a objective that would determine the outcome of the game.
I had the charge and killed the Nobz, but left a wound on the Warboss. The Warboss hit well but did terrible on the damage rolls. Next turn, (Top of Five, the last turn) she attacked first and the poor Warboss had no fight left in it, zero hits, even with a command re-roll. The Prime put the Warboss out its misery for the win!

A exciting, very close game. I feel that we will play some 100PL games, a lot of the games will be Combat Patrol.
